Kate could barely hold back her tears. This kind of thing wasn’t supposed to happen. Not here. John was finally home, safe and sound. No more war. No more life-and-death missions. It was almost cruel. For her to spend so much time worrying about John when he was overseas, only to experience the true horror after he returned home.
She refused to believe he was gone. Things like this didn’t happen. They just didn’t happen. Part of her knew she was in denial, but that didn’t matter. If she didn’t accept what she had just seen, she was perfectly fine allowing herself to believe it had never occurred. She sat, steel-jawed, with a gun held to her head, refusing to cry or show any sign of fear.
The woman—someone had called her Angela—was riffling through the glove compartment. Kate went from numb to angry in a flash. She didn’t know why that —after all that she had just witnessed in the space of a few minutes—really got to her. The invasion of privacy seemed almost more personal.
Angela had pulled out Kate’s base parking pass and assorted other junk.
“Kate Triton,” Angela read off the pass, shooting a glance back at her. “Married to John Triton . wait . my mistake, Sergeant John Triton.” She looked at the driver. “She married a Marine. How sweet.”
Kate was tempted to punch the bitch, but she knew she’d never get away with it surrounded by the rest of the goons.
Angela turned to her. “What did you marry him for? The benefits?”
“Well, if Triton was the redneck in the store back there,” the guy behind Kate said—she thought his name was Bennett—“he’s dead.”
That was all Kate needed to hear; someone putting her fears into words. Screw logic. To hell with denial. She knew she’d never get the guy behind her, so she lunged at the woman in the front seat.
Unfortunately, the guy in the back—Bennett— yanked Kate back into her own seat by her hair. The sharp pain was nothing compared to the anguish in her heart. She barely noticed when he released her hair and held another gun to her head.
“Settle down,” he said.
Kate seethed, but tried to calm herself. Getting killed would do no good. She just needed to wait things out until they stopped. John hadn’t had the chance to gas up the SUV before all hell broke loose, so they couldn’t be going all that far. She knew her kidnappers would never let her go willingly, but she believed that she could escape them at some point. She had to believe it. Or else, with John gone, she had nothing else to live for.
If only she knew why they needed her. What happened at the gas station was a bit over the top for a simple mini-mart robbery. Clearly they had been involved in something big enough that it justified—to them—killing cops. If only she had watched the news last night, she might have had an idea. But she had been so set on
